Chapter 1 BigBite Gas Cherenkov

چکیده
This document describes the Cherenkov detector that is to be constructed for the Hall A neutron d2 experiment (E06-014). The inclusive nature of that experiment makes the addition of the Cerenkov counter for pion and proton rejection critical for the low energy bins. Monte Carlo and analysis of G E suggest particle rates of (assuming a 500MeV ee threshold on the the BigBite shower detector): • e−: 2—5kHz (signal)

Cherenkov radiation in a photon gas
It is well-known that a charged particle moving with constant velocity in vacuum does not radiate. In a medium the situation can be different. If the so called Cherenkov condition is satisfied, i.e. the particle velocity exceeds the phase speed in the medium, the particle will radiate. We show that a charge moving with a constant velocity in a gas of photons emits Cherenkov radiation, even in t...
متن کاملE12-06-112: Measurement of neutron spin asymmetry An1 in the valence quark region using 8.8 GeV and 6.6 GeV beam energies and Bigbite spectrometer in Hall A
This document provides an update for experiment E12-06-122 [1]: a precision measurement of the virtual photon asymmetry A1 of the neutron in the Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) region (W 2 > 4 GeV) using the Hall A polarized He target and the Hall A Bigbite spectrometer up to x Bj ≈ 0.71. Since the approval of this experiment, the hall A d2 [2] experiment, a DIS experiment, and the hall A trans...
متن کاملHelium gas mixtures for ring imaging Cherenkov detectors with Csl photocathodes
In the past few years a readout for Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors [1] based on CsI photocathodes has been under intensive development [2-15] . The detector is a parallel-plate avalanche chamber (PPAC) with a UV-sensitive solid-CsI photocathode separated by a narrow gap (1-2 mm) from a wire-mesh anode plane (or wire anode plane as in ref. [4]) . The Cherenkov light generated in a radia...
متن کاملThe Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detectors for LHCb
The success of the LHCb experiment depends heavily on particle identification over the momentum range 2−100 GeV/c. To meet this challenge, LHCb uses a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) system composed of two detectors with three radiators. RICH1 has both aerogel and gas (C4F10) radiators, while RICH2 has only a gas (CF4) radiator. The design of RICH1 is almost complete, whereas RICH2 has been const...
متن کاملEmission of Cherenkov Radiation as a Mechanism for Hamiltonian Friction
We study the motion of a heavy tracer particle weakly coupled to a dense, weakly interacting Bose gas exhibiting Bose-Einstein condensation. In the so-called mean-field limit, the dynamics of this system approaches one determined by nonlinear Hamiltonian evolution equations. We prove that if the initial speed of the tracer particle is above the speed of sound in the Bose gas, and for a suitable...
